A hill too far

The splitting of East Jerusalem is key to the possible formation of a viable Palestinian state. A barren hill is being fought over by Likud and Kadima to who can gain the most land for Israel as a run up to the Israeli elections. As with other sites it is envisaged land Palestinian land would be annexed for further settlements. Ehud Olmert, the Acting Prime Minister, is talking cautiously about acceptability to the U.S. and the international community of Israel's final boundaries.

One political party, Green Leaf, promises talks with Hamas and hopes to appeal to young voters. They see Jerusalem as being capital of both Israel and Palestine.

Promises to increase settler land are intensifying as are personal abuse between leading Kadima and Likud figures.
