Exit Guantanamo

A Washington Post article reacts to comments following three suicides at Guantanamo Bay prison and says they convince him that its time for it to shut because of dehumanising process has on the captors, never mind those in captivity. The author refers to the book written by Moazzam Begg from Birmingham, UK following his experiences incarcerated at Guantanamo.

Indeed the reported comments on suicides as a PR stunt beggar belief, together with references to " asymmetric warfare" whatever that means. Equally horrifying were reefernces to prisoners about to be sent somewhere elase. At least we know about Guantanamo and where it exists, but it appears that the U.S. is holding prisoners and holding them on the territory of other countries. Britain is included in those accused of aiding the movement of prisoners by allowing aircraft carrying them to land here.

Excuses that "war" or combatting "terror" allow carte blanche behaviour and the tearing up of human rights is deeply troubling and needs to be resisted by all means. The police force appears to consider itself able to dispense with any consideration of public safety, a views which have led to one fatal tragedy, narrowly averting a second death more by luck than judgement.
