Clare Short's position

The Independent publishes a question and answer article in which Clare Short answers questions (6/11/2006). I think the comments she makes are revealing and allow her to make clear why she acted as she did.

Clare's constituency, Ladywood, used to cover the part of Handsworth and Handsworth Wood where I live, but boundary changes moved us into Jeff Rooker's Constituencey of Perry Barr, now presided over by Khalid Mahmood. Khalid has become outspoken about Clare, but with his own track record he need to exercise caution.

80 people out of around 130 asked for a selection meeting for the selection of a councillor for May 2007, but in keeping with New Labour it appears that the Labour Party officers have decided that they want to keep the sitting councillor. If 20% requested it then we were told there would be a selection. Since they made these rules up themselves it would have been expected that they would be followed. Since the result was not to their liking then forget it. There's democracy for you.
